Suzanne Gilliard’s paintings are featured in Vinni Marie D’Ambrosio’s An Italian Morning and displayed on this website’s Home page. Her landscapes, gardens, and flowers form a visual companion to the poetry.
Raised in New York City, Gilliard graduated from the Riverdale Country School before pursuing her artistic education in Europe. She studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Geneva and the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, and independently in Paris. Returning to the United States, she continued her studies with Leland Bell at the New York Studio School.
Gilliard identified closely with the New York artists known as the “painterly realists.” Her work has been shown in solo exhibitions in New York, Baltimore, and Atlanta. She was a member of the Prince Street Gallery and The Pen and Brush.
In 1987, Donald and Nancy Panoz commissioned her to create a series of large murals for Château Elan’s winery and hotel in North Georgia. Her work also includes additional murals and oil paintings on canvas.
